The Environmental Toll of a Single ChatGPT Query Is Absolutely Wild
The_Byte discusses the water and electrical demands of OpenAI's ChatGPT. According to research by UC Riverside's Shaolei Ren, a single 100-word email generated by ChatGPT consumes the equivalent of a full bottle of water and enough power to light 14 LED bulbs for one hour. If one out of every ten working Americans used ChatGPT once a week for a year, it would consume 435 million liters of water and 121,517 megawatt-hours of power.
